Human Beings and Nature: Planning the Infrastructure

The infrastructure represents both the stage for the regional culture and the foundation of the people's social and economic efficiency. Today, challenging environmental problems such as global warming and loss of biodiversity should be part of the planning of the infrastructure of our society.

NIT's distinctive approach to infrastructure planning is to :

・assess the true improvement to life quality.
・recognize and strengthen the potential of the existing system.
・evaluate the possibility of maintaining the environmental conditions, in other words, the balance between the anthroposphere and the environment.
・use the methods of near-natural construction to improve the self-healing power of damaged ecosystems.

We apply to design and planning the results of research on natural and social systems, and propose new methods of planning and construction that minimize the impact of the infrastructure on the environment.

The recovery work of Ohata River, once considered dead under past flood-control construction, lasted for only 6 hours. Yet, a month later,
the local newspaper declared: “Thanks to near-natural construction work, the ayu has revived.”

Stone is gaining high attention in recent hydraulic engineering works. On-site rocks of varying size and shape are carefully chosen and positioned appropriately.

The increasing number of tourists has made the reconstruction of old mountain trails a necessity. The conservation of the surrounding nature is the main challenge here.
